The most expensive cars of 2012

The most expensive cars of 2012

http://autos.yahoo.com/news/the-most-expensive-cars-of-2012.html

Ten years after introducing Maybach, Daimler announced it would shutter the super-luxury brand by 2013.

It wasn’t a surprise. Maybach never fully established an identity that could compete with Rolls-Royce and Bentley. And the brand lost money each year in its existence, according to Daimler CEO Dieter Zetsche.

That hasn’t kept the $1.4 million Maybach Landaulet down, at least in some circles. Madonna and Jay-Z are known lovers of the line. And along with the famously outré $2.6 million Bugatti Veyron Supersport 16.4 and the $1.7 million Koenigsegg Agera R, the Landaulet made this year’s list of the most expensive cars on the market today.

Behind the Numbers
To compile our list of the most expensive cars going on sale next year, we scoured price lists from well-known manufacturers like Bugatti, Rolls-Royce and Lamborghini, and from lesser-known companies like Leblanc and Shelby Super Cars. Some otherwise high-end entrants (Spyker, McLaren) didn’t quite have the stuff to make our list. Others, like Koenigsegg, had a few models that might have qualified, so we limited our list to one car from each manufacturer. We limited the cars on this list to new models, rather than vintage, and evaluated their prices based on MSRP, not auction or off-the-record sales.

What makes cars like the $970,000 SSC Tuatara and $1 million Hennessey Venom GT so expensive? A combination of rare and high-performance materials used—carbon fiber, silver trimmings, ceramic brakes, exotic wood—extraordinary tuning, and exclusively low production numbers. (To wit: The Ferrari 599X is made to order by invite only.)

That’s not all. Tire replacements can cost multiple thousands of dollars, plus fees. Some require specialized luggage for their front-situated trunks, at costs like $30,000 per set. And the Zenvo ST1, for instance, must be shipped to Denmark for any major repairs.

For the people who buy these cars, though, price isn’t exactly an issue. Franz-Josef Paefgen, the CEO of Bugatti when the company unveiled its Supersport in 2010, confirmed the mentality.

“The crisis cannot keep a Bugatti buyer away from buying a car for financial reasons,” Paefgen said at the time.

Take the $1.8 million ST1. Just like the $845,000 Porsche 918 Spyder, it’s likely out of your price range. But Danish delight has got a lock on Russian billionaires–so far.

The first person to pay the $500,000 deposit for the ST1 was a wealthy Slav who opted for a customized blue paint job and carbon fiber rims, says Bobby Khan, the president of New Jersey-based Emporio Motor Group. The dealership is the only place in the U.S. that will sell the car.

Khan says he tried to talk Mr. Russia out of the tires–one botched pothole and the entire wheel would need replacement–but the client would have none of it.

“He said, I want it because I want it,” Khan said.

The desire is understandable: hand-made, with a 1,250-horsepower 8-cylinder engine that goes 0-60mph in 2.9 seconds, ST1 has a top speed of 233mph. It has a wicked rear-wheel drive on a 7-speed manual transmission. The entire body is carbon fiber.

Only 15 of the ST1 will be made, with three slated for U.S. showrooms. Those specimens have already generated plenty of interest from high profile figures, as you can well imagine, but the bulk of the buyers will remain anonymous.

“We’ve already got a waiting list,” Khan says.

The latest on the list
With that in mind, here’s something else for the friendly neighborhood billionaire to consider: The $1.3 million Pagani Huayra. A newcomer to this year’s tally, Pagani’s 700-horsepower gullwing stunner, named after an ancient god of wind, is made from carbo-titanium and uses a 12-cylinder turbocharged engine.

Pagani is a small brand but has cult status among track regulars and exotic aficionados. Huayra is a big deal because it will be the first time a Pagani-made vehicle will be sold stateside.

Unfortunately for acolytes, it’ll be some time before the opportunity hits stateside. Pagani planned to debut its car in U.S. showrooms earlier this year but faced delays due to airbag compliance. Company executives maintain that five Huayras will make it to the states by 2013.

Worth the wait? Maybe. The 20-year-old company’s previous model, the Zonda F, once held the road-car lap record at the infamous Nürburgring racetrack in Germany. Huayra is said to be no less impressive. For that price, it better be.

The Truth and Pitiduwe Siridhamma Thero, Siri Samanthabaddra Thero

Underwater giant on the brink

Underwater giant on the brink

Background

The leatherback turtle has survived for more than a hundred million years, but is now facing extinction. Recent estimates of numbers show that this species is declining precipitously throughout its range, particularly in the Pacific over the last twenty years: as few as 2,300 adult females now remain making the Pacific leatherback the world's most endangered marine turtle population.

Although Atlantic populations are rather more stable, models predict that they, too, will decline due to the large numbers of adults being killed accidentally by fishing fleets. In the Atlantic, the fact that they are widely distributed during the migration process and that they do not dive very deep increase the risk of interaction of leatherback turtles with longline fisheries.

WWF is working to conserve leatherback turtles and their habitats in Central and South America, and the western Pacific through concerted pan-Pacific and trans-Atlantic approaches that aim to protect critical nesting beaches and migratory pathways. This is being achieved by:

  • protecting nesting beaches and nearshore habitats by establishing and strengthening sanctuaries and wildlife refuges;
  • raising awareness so that local communities will protect turtles and their nests;
  • promoting regional agreements to conserve marine turtles;
  • reducing longline bycatch through promoting and facilitating gear modification, using new migration and genetics information to develop and trial management measures and ensuring that any traditional take is sustainable.

Physical Description

The leatherback turtle is the largest marine turtle and one of the largest living reptiles. Leatherbacks are one of the most migratory of all marine turtle species, making both trans-Atlantic and trans-Pacific crossings. They are easily distinguished by their carapace, which is leathery, not hard as in other turtles, and by their long front flippers.

Leatherbacks have a unique system of blood supply to their bones and cartilage. This enables their body temperature to stay several degrees above the water temperature and allows them to tolerate cold water, rather like a mammal. They can dive to depths of up to 1,200m, much deeper than any other marine turtle.

Recent DNA analysis confirms that Atlantic and Pacific populations are genetically distinct lineages of a single species. In turn, nesting Pacific leatherback populations are separated into two genetically distinct populations (eastern and western populations).

A leatherback was recorded to have descended to a maximum depth of 1,230 metres, which represents the deepest dive ever recorded for a reptile.

Range States

Albania, Angola, Antigua and Barbuda, Aruba, Australia, Bahamas, Barbados, Brazil, Cayman Islands, China, Colombia, The Democratic Republic of Congo, Costa Rica, Cuba, Cote d'Ivoire, Dominica, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Eritrea, Fiji, Fench Guiana, Ghana, Grenada, Guadeloupe, Guatemala, Guyana, Haiti, Honduras, India, Indonesia, Jamaica, Liberia, Malaysia, Martinique, Mexico, Montserrat, Mozambique, Myanmar, Netherlands Antilles, Nicaragua, Panama, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Puerto Rico, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Senegal, Solomon Islands, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Suriname, Taiwan, Thailand, Togo, Trinidad and Tobago, Turks and Caicos Islands, United States, Venezuela, Virgin Islands, British Virgin Islands, U.S.

Ecological Region

Mediterranean Sea, Northeast Atlantic Shelf Marine, Southern Australian Marine, Benguela Current, Humboldt Current, Agulhas Current, Western Australia Marine, Gulf of California, Canary Current, Sulu-Sulawesi Seas, Bismarck-Solomon Seas, Banda-Flores Sea, Great Barrier Reef, Palau Marine, Andaman Sea, East African Marine, West Madagascar Marine, Mesoamerican Caribbean Reef, Southern Caribbean Sea, Northeast Brazil Shelf Marine.

Why is this species important?

As a major jellyfish predator, the leatherback turtle provides natural ecological control of jellyfish populations. Overabundance of jellyfish may reduce fish populations as jellyfish can feed on fish larvae and reduce population growth of commercially important fish. Hence, the presence of leatherback turtles benefits fish, fisheries and people.

Interesting Facts

The biggest ever recorded leatherback turtle was a male stranded on a Welsh beach that reached 256 cm long and weighed 916 kg.

Sri Lankan President, Mahinda, among top five in The WORLD

Sri Lankan President among top five in The WORLD

President Mahinda Rajapaksa has been voted among five most attractive persons in the world, through a worldwide voting on Internet by the prestigious Time Magazine. The 2011 survey was carried out to find out how the Time worldwide web readers picks the most influential 100 people in the world.

Though official voting for inclusion on the TIME 100 list ended over the weekend with South Korean pop icon on top, surfers on Time website could continue to vote for their favourites until the final list, selected by Time editors, is announced on Thursday (21).

At the time of going to press last night, President Rajapaksa was ranked fifth with a staggering 108,085 people voting him to be the most influential person in the world.

There have been many commendable messages by thousands of voters who have hailed President Rajapaksa as a truly influential leader who put a permanent end to a three decade long terrorism and liberated innocent civilians with an inspirational political leadership.

Rain

Jay Chou

Susan Boyle

Cheng Yen

The Lankan President is the only politician to secure a topmost slot on his debut appearance in the Time 100 Most Influential personalities annual contest. In contrast, Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin, making his third appearance in Time 100 Voting, could secure only the 73rd place.

In a significant pattern of voting, US President Barack Obama was placed only 46th, slightly ahead of his country's State Secretary and former First Lady Hillary Clinton (43rd) and Burmese political icon Aung San Suu Kyi (39th). However, the founder of the controversial WikiLeaks website which became popular overnight after leaking confidential state reports, Julian Assange was placed 11th.

Finishing on top when the official voting ended was Rain, the Korean sensation who has been making waves in his native country for years. His catchy beats and hot dance moves have made his popularity soar internationally. He has polled a mammoth 434,992 votes. In the second place is Taiwanese director-singer-songwriter Jay Chou with 227,094 votes.

The 32-year-old has already conquered Asia with his sweet tunes and sultry style.

Singer Susan Boyle is placed third with 160,457 votes. Boyle certainly couldn't have dreamed the dream she's been living since she showed off her pipes and stunned the skeptical judges on Britain's Got Talent two years ago.

The journey from anonymity to stardom has brought her two multiplatinum No. 1 albums, a book deal and an exhaustive media tour across the world.

Cheng Yen, a 73-year-old Buddhist nun and philanthropist is placed fourth. Widely considered Chinese world's Mother Teresa, she runs the Buddhist Tzu Chi Foundation, one of Asia's largest charities.

Talking cars like Knight Rider's could go on sale soon

Talking cars like Knight Rider's could go on sale soon

David Hasselhoff in the 1980s TV series Knight Rider, with his talking car You may soon own a talking car, though the open shirt will be optional

Remember the Knight Rider car? The one declaring "scanner indicating danger ahead", "your reflexes are slow" or "I shall activate a turbo-boost"?

A similarly futuristic car might hit the road sooner than you think, according to Klaus Draeger, BMW's head of research and development.

Many cars are already connected to computer systems, making drivers' and passengers' lives both more comfortable and safer.

But until now they have mainly been receiving information, so as yet they are not really engaging in dialogues, Mr Draeger says.

BMW's so-called Connected Drive concept, currently on show at the Geneva motor show, aims to change that.

Rain ahead?

BMW's system brings together more than 50 communication functions.

They include sophisticated satellite navigation systems and a self-drive technology that helps the car move safely from the fast lane to the hard shoulder on its own if the driver has a heart attack.

There are also more trivial technologies such as wireless links between the car's entertainment systems and home computers.

BMW Connected Drive Vision concept vehicle Cars that communicate with the world around them are safer, more entertaining and more comfortable.

"It's the way you get information into and out of the the car and what you can do with the information that is important," says Mr Draeger.

In future, your car will not only spot motorway traffic jams, it will also be able to calculate whether any delays on alternative routes make them even slower. And then the car will recommend whether or not you should get off the motorway.

The system will be helped by information received from other cars, which will be sending information about the road ahead back to you.

For instance, if drivers of other cars are suddenly using their window wipers and their brakes, the system might conclude that the road they are driving on is wet and slippery and perhaps that visibility is reduced. It will then warn you, before communicating your response to other system users.

Such information should help business travellers cut journey times whilst at the same time making them both safer and more comfortable.

"So whereas satellite navigation may initially be about comfort and efficiency, once moving about, once it starts identifying obstacles, it becomes a safety issue as well," reasons Mr Draeger.

Business tool

Other features include close connectivity between a driver's desktop computer and the computer in the car.

If you schedule a meeting in the office, the information can be sent directly to your car.

Directions will be automatically entered into the satnav. Nearby hotels will be identified and an electronic booking can be made from the car. An electronic diary in the car can alert you to make sure you leave on time to be at the appointment as scheduled.

The car will also synchronise your emails, which can be read out aloud, or let you respond to Facebook messages while waiting for traffic lights to turn green.

Parking the car can be done with the assistance of a bird's-eye view of the car on a screen - or remotely, while you are standing outside the car watching it glide into a parking space.

Modern luxury

Other carmakers are also making their cars more intuitive and better connected with the world around them.

Audi's latest satnav system is linked to the internet, providing "real-time traffic information, traffic-influenced turn-by-turn directions and alerts to accidents and other incidents along their route".

Recent models from Mercedes will tell you when you seem tired and when the car in front is slowing down. Volvo, meanwhile, is trying to make its cars' electronics easier to understand and use.

Man using mobile phone in car Don't talk and drive. Let the car do it for you.

"To have a machine that is easy to control, like an iPhone or an iPad, is luxury these days," says Volvo Cars' chief executive Stefan Jacoby

"This is an area where we can create luxury in the premium segment. I think there will be more intelligent choices."

Safety implications

The list of applications goes on and on and over time it will get even longer, according to Tim Routsis, chief executive of engineering company Cosworth.

"The younger generation is always connected when they are at home or in the office, and increasingly they want the same in their cars," he says.

Giving them what they want is not an easy task, however, not least because of the safety implications of introducing some of these technologies to drivers whose attention should be on the road.

Some applications may improve safety, but others may distract, so a major challenge will relate to how and when communication should take place.

Solutions will need to become much more sophisticated than they are today, Mr Routsis reasons.

Increasingly, it's starting to drive buying decisions”

End Quote Tim Routsis Cosworth's chief executive

For instance, a blanket ban on reprogramming satnavs or writing Twitter messages whilst the car is in motion will be irritating for a passenger who should be able to engage with the electronics without disturbing the driver.

"So to facilitate this, the system will need to detect whether it is the driver or the passenger using the system," he says.

Driving buying decisions

Hence, as the list of applications gets longer, so does the list of challenges facing the industry, Mr Routsis believes.

And yet, he expects carmakers to do all it can to deliver.

"In-car technologies offer new points of differentiation," he continues.

"And increasingly, it's starting to drive buying decisions."

2011 Cricket World Cup Opening Ceremony in Bangladesh - Watch Live Videos

2011 Cricket World Cup Opening Ceremony in Bangladesh

Cricket is a great sport and the Cricket World Cup is the highlight of every cricket lover’s year. This time the event, which is held every four years, will be even more memorable for cricket lovers living in Bangladesh.

On February 18, 2009, Haroon Lorgat, the Chief Executive of the International Cricket Council, announced that the opening ceremony of the 2011 Cricket World Cup will be held in Bangladesh. The event will take place almost exactly two years from now on February 19, 2011, and proceedings will coincide with the opening game which will also take place in Bangladesh on the same day. That is exciting news for both cricket lovers in Bangladesh and the people of the country in general as the move will no doubt generate a lot of tourism and cast a spotlight on the country, hopefully helping to further improve its image and economy.

Haroon Lorgat also said that the number of matches to be played at the fifteen different selected venues had been discussed. It is obvious that the event should be used to bolster local tourism efforts and every endeavor must be made to ensure that it is a massive success. If you would like to combine sport with leisure, you’ll be happy to know that the World Cup will be making its way to either Bangabandhu National Stadium in Dhaka, Narayanganj Osmani Stadium in Fatullah or the Sher-e-Bangla Cricket Stadium in Dhaka. The final decision as to which stadium will be used for the event is yet to be made.

No doubt, this means that Bandladesh will experience a lot of tourist-related development as city officials try to ensure that it is completely ready to receive this prestigious event and the many tourists that travel with it. Though it is still some time before the 2011 Cricket World Cup takes place, fans would definitely do well to book well in advance to avoid disappointment. Visitors from other countries would also do well to take advantage of their trip and explore the country between matches so that they can learn a little bit more about the rich beauty that is to be found in Bangladesh.

President Hosini Mubarak resigns : Videos

CAIRO — Hundreds of thousands of protesters screamed and cheered Friday as it was announced that President Hosni Mubarak was stepping down.

Chanting "Free Egypt!" the crowds exploded in jubilant cries of joy, blaring car horns, dancing in the streets, waving flags and singing after 18 days of protests ousted Mubarak after almost 30 years in office.

People dropped to their knees in prayers. Chants from Tahrir Square where the protests began were audible hundreds of yards away as the announcement was made on state television.

Egypt : President Hosini Mubarak resigns

Hosni Mubarak steps down as president of Egypt, after weeks of protest by anti-government demonstrators in Cairo and other cities.

"Around Cairo, drivers are honking their horns in celebration and guns are being fired into the air. The huge crowds are rejoicing. However, the army takeover looks very much like a coup. The constitution has been breached. Officially, the speaker of parliament should be taking over. Instead it is the army leadership. Egypt moves into a very uncertain future."

The BBC's Jon Leyne in Cairo says: "The announcement took everyone by surprise and caused immediate and riotous celebration in Tahrir Square."

According to article 84 of the Egyptian constitution, if the president steps down, the speaker of the People's Assembly shall temporarily assume the presidency. Secondly, a new president shall be chosen within a maximum period of 60 days from the date of the vacancy of the presidential office. It is not clear if this will apply if the Higher Military Council is in charge of the nation's affairs.

Undergrads to face new English aptitude test

Undergrads to face new English aptitude test

The Higher Education Ministry had decided to conduct a separate examination to check the English language skills of students who sat for the Advanced Level Examination last year before being selected to universities, officials said yesterday.

Ministry Secretary Dr. Sunil Jayantha Navaratne said that the students would have to undergo a three-month English course prior to university admission based on the results of this exam. He said that this was a one-off exam as most students had not sat for the General English paper at the 2010 A/L exam last year. However, he said that it would be made compulsory for all the students to sit for this paper from 2011 onwards. “Those who do not sit for this paper would not be admitted to any university. There are schools with no English teachers. Students of those schools should also sit for the paper. We only want to check their English knowledge before entering them to university,” he said.

Murali to be Australia spin coach

Murali to be Australia spin coach

Muttiah Muralidaran - once an outcast spurned by Australian cricket fans - will sign on as a guest spin coach to help mould the country's next generation of young spinners into champions.

In a stunning coup for Australian cricket, Sri Lanka's controversial spin genius will spend several weeks at the Brisbane-based Centre of Excellence in June for intensive training with rising Australian spinners, according to a report in the Australian newspaper Daily Telegraph.

Test cricket's greatest wicket-taker will not only impart the secrets of his spin wizardry but also record a spin coaching tutorial so his extraordinary knowhow will be passed on to future generations of Australian spinners.

It is a sign of how far the wheel has turned that Murali - who has been repeatedly heckled, taunted and even had fruit thrown at him by unruly fans here since being no-balled by Darrell Hair in the 1995 Boxing Day Test - will become Australia's potential spin saviour. Australian great Greg Chappell, one-time Indian coach and Australia's only full-time selector, masterminded Murali's visit by using his extensive network of contacts in the subcontinent.

"This is a wonderful opportunity ... Murali has probably forgotten more about spin bowling than most people will ever know in a lifetime," Chappell told The Daily Telegraph yesterday.

"Murali is one of the greatest spin bowlers of all time, we are very, very lucky.

"It is not just Murali's obvious physical skill that will be a huge benefit for our young spinners.

"It is also his mental toughness, his cleverness, his cunning and his ability to be able to set a batsman up and bowl 10-15 overs to a plan."

The Murali news is a shot in the arm for Australian cricket at a time when it conducts a major review into a devastating Ashes loss and tries to plot a fresh course into the future.

The nation's depleted spin stocks are one of the most pressing issues with 10 frontline spinners deployed at Test level since Shane Warne walked off into the sunset at the end of the 2006-07 home Ashes series.

Xavier Doherty and Michael Beer were both plucked from obscurity to wear baggy green caps this summer after Nathan Hauritz was sacked before the first Ashes Test.

Australian spinners have long struggled to unlock the secrets of the doosra and Murali was the man who made this mysterious delivery his own - even though the bona fides of his action were often questioned.

Murali's visit will also be invaluable for Australia's batsmen as his action will be recorded live and downloaded on the Academy's pro-batter video machine so batsmen can face a "virtual Murali" on the video-wall machine which mimics any bowler in the world.

Warne and former Pakistani off-spinner Saqlain Mustaq both had brief guest stints at the Centre of Excellence but Murali's visit - not long after he farewells international cricket at the 50-over World Cup starting this month - is positive news that Australian cricket desperately needs.

Chappell said Murali's coaching role would be confirmed once details were finalised in the next few weeks.

The Top 10 Most Endangered Forests

The Top 10 Most Endangered Forests

Photographs for TIME by Kemal Jufri / Imaji

Today kicks off the UN International Year of Forests. (I know, it feels like International Polar Year just ended—probably because it was actually two years.) The event is meant to focus global attention on the plight of the world's forests, which provide carbon sequestration, climate regulation and are host to an astounding variety of biodiversity. While we often think that forests are being fast lost—hence the perennial attempts to save the rainforest—there is some good news. Thanks to aggressive reforestation projects in Europe, North America and Asia—especially in China—the loss of trees isn't as bad as it could be. The U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization reported that the estimated 4.032 billion hectares of forest is down from 4.085 billion hectares in 2000, but the rate of trees cleared has slowed significant since the 1990s, when 8.3 million hectares were lost each year.

But while reforestation can stanch some of the bleeding, when a native forest is cleared something valuable is lost forever, even if secondary growth eventually covers up the scars. And some places are more vulnerable than others. Conservation International (CI) has come out with a list of the 10 most vulnerable forest hotspots in the world, forests that have lost more than 90% of their original habitat and which harbor at least 1,500 plant species that are found nowhere else in the world. (CI focuses on "hotspots"—areas of the planet that host endemic species, knowing that when the habitat goes, so does the wildlife.) The threatened forests range from the U.S. to China, and if nothing is done to save them, they may not last much longer:
Hotspot Remaining habitat
1 Indo-Burma (southern Asia) 5%
2 New Zealand 5%
3 Sundaland (Indonesia/Malaysia) 7%
4 Philippines 7%
5 Atlantic Forest (South America) 8%
6 Mountains of Southwest China 8%
7 California Floristic Province (U.S. and Mexico) 10%
8 Coastal Forests of Eastern Africa 10%
9 Madagascar & Indian Ocean Islands 10%
10 Eastern Afromontane (Africa) 11%

Food Prices: Up, Up and Away

Food Prices: Up, Up and Away

The U.N.'s Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) released a report this week that food prices reached an all-time high in January. The Food Price Index rose 3.4% in January to 231, surpassing June 2008 levels that sparked food riots and hoarding from Haiti to the Philippines. Prices of all commodity groups except meat — cereals, oil, dairy and sugar — gained over prices in December.

As I wrote here earlier this week, soaring food prices have been cited as one of the underlying causes of the revolution underway in Egypt, and Algeria has reportedly made large purchases of wheat after deadly riots over high food prices broke out there last month. Al Jazeera is also reporting that Honduras, El Salvador, Guatemala, and Indonesia have all taken measures to limit the effect of food prices on farmers and consumers.

"Today's announcement by the FAO should ring alarm bells in capitals around the world," Policy and Research Director of Oxfam America Gawain Kripke said in a statement released after numbers came out. "Hundreds of thousands of people are already feeling the impact of rapidly increasing food prices. Good harvests are offsetting the worst for many but if prices remain high it will be just a matter of months before the world's poor are hit by another major food price crisis. Governments need to act now and act together to stop the rot."

Kripke called for the Committee on Food Security to develop an emergency response plan for nations to coordinate trade policies and ensure protection for the most vulnerable people affected by rising food prices. He also called on the G20 Finance Ministers to increase investment in small-holder agriculture and encouraged governments to resist the urge to ban exports and hoard food in the face of rising prices.

At Davos 2011, economist Nouriel "Dr. Doom" Roubini told CNN that rising commodity prices posed the greatest threat to global stability.

Kepler Telescope Finds Swarm of New world

Kepler Telescope Finds Swarm of New Worlds

http://www.time.com/

For a year and a half now, NASA's Kepler space telescope has been staring, pretty much constantly, at a group of about 156,000 stars, located near the constellation Cygnus. In all that time, month in and month out, Kepler's digital eyes have barely blinked.

But some of the stars have. Their light has dimmed a tiny bit, not just once, but over and over, in a regular, repeating pattern. And that's exactly what Kepler was designed to see — the clockwork signal of distant planets as they pass, once every orbit, between their parent stars and us. (See the top 50 space moments since Sputnik.)

Kepler's ultimate goal is to find a twin, in both size and in distance from its star, of Earth — an orbital sweet spot known as a star's habitable zone. That's because astronomers assume these are likeliest places for alien life to have taken hold. The telescope hasn't quite done that yet, but the Kepler team has just announced a huge flock of candidate planets, pushing its total catch so far to more than 1,200. If they all indeed turn out to be planets, it will more than triple the number of known worlds orbiting distant stars — and that's just in a tiny patch of sky, and relatively close to Earth. (See pictures of five nations' space programs.)

"I expected Kepler would be finding a lot of planets," said Debra Fischer, a Yale astronomer who's not a part of the Kepler team, at a press conference. "But I'm amazed to see these milestone discoveries so quickly."

Fischer isn't just talking just about the impressive numbers, but also about how small some of the possible planets are. Last month, Kepler reported a world only about 40% larger than Earth — a very big deal since most of the planets identified have been Jupiter-scale worlds. But that's nothing: among the latest candidates are 68 worlds about the size of Earth, including a handful that are no bigger than Mars. Five of these, moreover, lie in the habitable zone. The other 49 planets Kepler found in habitable zones are bigger, but, as Kepler principal investigator Bill Borucki pointed out, "some are as big as Jupiter, which means their moons could have liquid water" — a crucial ingredient, biologists think, for life. "If there's life there, you could imagine the inhabitants going from one moon to another for vacation. Although," he added, "they probably wouldn't do it every day."

Borucki, who was turned down by NASA four times before getting the go-ahead to build and launch Kepler, cautions that some of these new worlds might turn out not to be planets after all. Plenty of astronomical signals can look deceptively planet-like at first. They all have to be confirmed — ideally by measuring the object's mass with a second telescope. That's usually done by observing the slight wobble in the star caused by the tug of the orbiting planet's gravity. (Comment on this story.)

Only a handful of Kepler's planets have passed that test so far. In part that's because there's such a huge volume of data coming in from the space probe, and only a limited number of astronomers on the Kepler team who can do the followups. By releasing the candidates to the wider astronomical community, the team will be able to get these confirmations a lot faster — although with only four months' worth of Kepler's 18-months of data processed so far, the backlog may get bigger before it gets smaller. (See pictures of Earth from space.)

Still, it will be hard to beat an actual discovery announced today and published in the current Nature: Kepler has found not just one or two, but six planets orbiting a single star known as Kepler 11 — an entire solar system, all in one shot. "The five inner planets," says Nature paper co-author Eric Ford, of the University of Florida, "are a few times as massive as Earth, all crammed in closer to the star than Mercury is to the Sun. It's remarkable — we never expected to see something like this."

Says Jack Lissauer, a planetary theorist at NASA Ames Research Center and the lead author of the Nature study: "We suspected that the planetary zoo would have a great variety. But what that was, and how quickly we would find out about it, no way. This is way beyond anything we expected. Things like Kepler 11, these are just weird."

Why Obama has to get Egypt right

Why Obama has to get Egypt right

Some have articulated fears of adverse consequences of free elections, suggesting that the Egyptian military may seek to falsify the results; that Israel may be adamantly opposed to a regime change; that the domino effect of extremist politics spreading to other countries must be avoided; and that the supply of oil from the region could be disrupted. These notions constitute the old conventional wisdom about the Middle East - and need to be changed, lest Washington incorrectly put up resistance to or hesitate in supporting transition in Egypt.

By George Soros

Revolutions usually start with enthusiasm and end in tears. In the case of the Middle East, the tears could be avoided if President Obama stands firmly by the values that got him elected. Although American power and influence in the world have declined, our allies and their armies look to us for direction. These armies are strong enough to maintain law and order as long as they stay out of politics; thus the revolutions can remain peaceful. That is what the United States should insist on while encouraging corrupt and repressive rulers who are no longer tolerated by their people to step aside and allow new leaders to be elected in free and fair elections. That is the course that the revolution in Tunisia is taking. Tunisia has a relatively well-developed middle class, women there enjoy greater rights and opportunities than in most Muslim countries, and the failed regime was secular in character. The prospects for democratic change are favorable.

Egypt is more complex and, ultimately, more influential, which is why it is so important to get it right. The protesters are very diverse, including highly educated and common people, young and old, well-to-do and desperately poor. While the slogans and crowds in Tahrir Square are not advancing a theocratic agenda at all, the best-organized political opposition that managed to survive in that country’s repressive environment is the Muslim Brotherhood. In free elections, the Brotherhood is bound to emerge as a major political force, though it is far from assured of a majority.

That would be regrettable. President Obama personally and the United States as a country have much to gain by moving out in front and siding with the public demand for dignity and democracy. This would help rebuild America’s leadership and remove a lingering structural weakness in our alliances that comes from being associated with unpopular and repressive regimes. Most important, doing so would open the way to peaceful progress in the region. The Muslim Brotherhood’s cooperation with Mohamed ElBaradei, the Nobel laureate who is seeking to run for president, is a hopeful sign that it intends to play a constructive role in a democratic political system. As regards contagion, it is more likely to endanger the enemies of the United States - Syria and Iran - than our allies, provided that they are willing to move out ahead of the avalanche.

The main stumbling block is Israel. In reality, Israel has as much to gain from the spread of democracy in the Middle East as the United States has. But Israel is unlikely to recognize its own best interests because the change is too sudden and carries too many risks. And some U.S. supporters of Israel are more rigid and ideological than Israelis themselves. Fortunately, Obama is not beholden to the religious right, which has carried on a veritable vendetta against him. The American Israel Public Affairs Committee is no longer monolithic or the sole representative of the Jewish community. The main danger is that the Obama administration will not adjust its policies quickly enough to the suddenly changed reality.

I am, as a general rule, wary of revolutions. But in the case of Egypt, I see a good chance of success. As a committed advocate of democracy and open society, I cannot help but share in the enthusiasm that is sweeping across the Middle East. I hope President Obama will expeditiously support the people of Egypt. My foundations are prepared to contribute what they can. In practice, that means establishing resource centers for supporting the rule of law, constitutional reform, fighting corruption and strengthening democratic institutions in those countries that request help in establishing them, while staying out of those countries where such efforts are not welcome.

Scientists find true language of love

Scientists find true language of love

According to new research simple words such as ‘be’, ‘that’, ‘will’, ‘him’, ‘and’ and even ‘a’ could hold the key to a successful marriage. Experts say the style in which couples talk and how they use common words can predict whether a relationship will be successful or not. It is already well known that people are attracted to potential partners who resemble themselves in personality, values and physical appearance. However, experts now claim these features only skim the surface of what makes a relationship work. The ways that people talk are also important according to the study which found that people who speak in a similar style are more compatible. The US study focused on what it dubbed ‘function words’.

These are not nouns or verbs, but everyday words such as a, be, anything, that, will, him and even and. Study co-author Professor James Pennebaker, of Texas University, said how we use these words constitutes our writing and speaking style and couples who use them in the same way have better and longer-lasting partnerships.

Researchers examined whether the speaking and writing styles couples adopt during conversation with each other predict future dating behaviour and the long-term strength of relationships.

They conducted two experiments in which a computer programme compared partners’ language styles.

In the first study, pairs of college students had four-minute speed dates while their conversations were recorded. Almost every pair covered the same topics, such as their study subject, where they were from and if they liked college.

Prof Pennebaker said: "Every conversation sounded more or less the same to the naked ear, but text analysis revealed stark differences in language synchrony. The pairs whose language style matching scores were above average were almost four times as likely to want future contact as pairs whose speaking styles were out of sync."

A second study revealed the same pattern in everyday online chats between dating couples over the course of 10 days. Almost 80 percent of the couples whose writing style matched were still dating three months later, compared with approximately 54 percent of the couples who did not match as well.

Prof Pennebaker said: "What people are saying to each other is important, but how they are saying it may be even more telling.

"But what’s wonderful about this is we don’t really make that decision - it just comes out of our mouths. People are not consciously synchronizing their speech."
