alt(Colombo, Lankapuvath) - The reinstructed Galle-Matara railway line will be declared open on 16 February.
Trains could now be operated at a speed of 100 Kilo Meters per hour on this track breaking its 40 km/hr speed limit maintained since colonial era at the commencement.
US dollars 36 million have been spent on the first phase of construction.
The railway Department warned the public to be more cautious at railway crossings.
There are 102 railway crossings between Galle and Matara. The project has been implemented with the objective of turning the coastal railway line into a high speed track.
The second phase of construction between Galle and Hikkaduwa will begin on February 15. Thereafter, the railway track from Hikkaduwa to Kalutara South and from there to Maradana will be upgraded.
