The Indian team will also be leaving for Sri Lanka today from Chennai. Dhoni’s wedding reception, it is said, will be organised in a grand manner only after the team’s return from Sri Lanka.

A Tribute to H.R. Jothipala

Inimitable Jothipala

by Walter Wijenayake
www.island.lk

Melodious voice of Hettiarachchige Reginald Jothipala took most of our youth into a dream world for he held a record of singing the most number of love songs and love duets. At the time of his untimely death on July 7, 1987 at the age of 51 years, he was the uncrowned playback maestro of the Sinhala screen.

He was born to the family of H.R. James and Ahaliyagoda H. K. Podinona Perera on Feb. 121936 at Katawalamulla. He was the oldest in a family of five and was a product of St. Lawrence’s College, Maradana and St. John’s College, Dematagoda.

He had neither pursued music as a subject in his school career nor since his completion of studies. He had the habit of spending his time at tea kiosks or community centres listening to the radio in enjoying the other vocalists as he did not possess a radio set at home. However, his passion for music swept him into the real track.

This idol of the common man spoke all three languages, Sinhala, English and Tamil and was born with a sharp tongue for music. He had an advantage over many other playback singers in that he had a stable voice and proper Sinhala diction and more importantly a voice suitable as a playback singer. However, he became an essential part of commercial formula films as the playback voice for matinee idols.

Artistes, film stars etc., may come and go but barely a handful of them remain immortalized in the hearts and minds of the people. Although 23 years have elapsed since his demise, his songs are still among the most demanded numbers in the hearts and minds of the people of this country. He is an artiste never to be forgotten.

To my knowledge, he was first aligned with Wasantha Sandanayake and G. S. B. Rani Perera at Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation and began his career as a vocalist, singing duets. He presented a song ‘Siriyame Sara’ to the film ‘Surathalee’ of Cyril P. Abeyratne of which music was directed by T. R. Pana. He rendered his voice to all classes of actors ranging from Eddie Jayamanne, Ananda Jayaratne, Gamini Fonseka, Vijaya Kumaratunge, Ravindra Randeniya, Sanath Gunathilaka, to the younger generation of actors, such as, Damith Fonseka and Lal Weerasinghe.

In the film ‘Sandesaya’ of the doyen of Sri Lankan cinema, Lester James Peiris, he sang the popular number ‘Puruthugeesikaraya Ratawal Allanna Suraya’ with Sydney Atygalle and some others, to the tunes composed by the reputed musician Sunil Santha and lyrics written by veteran lyricist Arisen Ahubudu.

Since then he shot up to the highly competitive field of playback singing through sacrifice, dedication, humility and patience. He sang ‘Man ava, hira bath kala lakap oken ringala’ to the film ‘Sri 296’. He reigned in the Sinhala film industry as a playback singer for two decades from 1965 to 1987.

He successfully completed the 150th one man show, ‘Jothi Rathriya’, which coincided with his birth anniversary just before his demise. He also performed in Singapore, Malaysia, England - London, the USA, Canada, the Middle East, Italy - Rome. The great musician who sang last with Latha Walpola and enriched the cinema world, also won several awards in recognition of his singing talents.

He was interested in being a singer and not an actor. However, he acted in a number of films and contributed 330 songs to films. The last film in which he included a song was ‘Supiri Balawatha’ which was released in 2007.

Once, the celebrated Indian singer Mohamed Rafi said that Jothipala should have been born in India, as Sri Lanka was too small a country, to enable him to be rocketed into the international sphere.

He had performed in 242 concerts, the Jothipala Fan Club named ‘Jothi Mithuru Samajaya’. This series was launched in 1971. He married Winter - a nurse by profession. They had four children. In the last days of his life, he had uttered, ‘I will not live long. I won’t feel sorry for an early death’. Further he had said, ‘Sing my songs depicting the virtues of love and romance.’

Muththaiya Muralidaran will Retire after the Galle Test Match in this month !

A Sad News For

Sri Lankan Cricket History !

Muralitharan announces his retirement

Muttiah Muralitharan, the leading wicket-taker in Tests and ODIs, will retire from Test cricket after the first Test against India in Galle, which begins on July 18. While he will not play the subsequent tri-series, and will pick and choose which ODIs to play in, Murali will be available for selection if the team needs him for the 2011 World Cup, which Sri Lanka is co-hosting.

"Murali has been thinking for some time about the right time to go," a source close to the offspinner told Cricinfo. "All along he has been determined to go while he is still performing rather than just hanging on. He made the decision last week after the Asia Cup and met with the selectors and captain over the weekend to explain to them his position. He is really keen to play on to the World Cup but at the same time he does not want to stand in the way of younger talent. So he will see how things go over the next few months."

Cricinfo has learnt that Murali met Aravinda de Silva, the chairman of selectors, and captain Kumar Sangakkara over the weekend to discuss his future. He was asked to consider playing the full series against India, but he was unsure about being at his best if bowled heavily throughout the series.

"Murali took a decision to retire from Test cricket during the West Indies series in November, but with an unscheduled Indian series coming up he has fast tracked his retirement from Test cricket," Murali's manager Kushil Gunasekara said. "The selectors want Murali to be around just in case they don't find a suitable replacement for him for the 2011 World Cup. They probably want the spinners to work around Murali."

Murali also considered a stint in county cricket, playing for Surrey, but that is unlikely because Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) doesn't want him to play too much cricket before the World Cup. Cricinfo also learnt that the selectors and management have privately communicated their desire for him to play on until the World Cup, counting on his experience in the big tournament.

About a year ago, Murali had announced he would retire after the home series against West Indies late this year, but in last November he said he could advance the Test retirement. "I am 37 years old and I can't bowl as much as those days because I get tired after 15-16 overs," he had told Cricinfo then. "But I will try and play a little bit of one-day cricket - that's only 10 overs to bowl. If I find everything is not going well I might retire from both forms of the game before the World Cup."

Murali has taken 792 wickets in 132 Tests and 515 wickets in 337 ODIs. Galle will be an interesting shot at retiring with 800 Test wickets.

One man makes difference for the world !

A great man in our time ! Bandula Hewage

A decade ago it was a very dry place. When sun was over the head, people didn't have any shelter to cover. The place was along the Canel of Hittatiya, Matara Sri Lanka near the Sujatha Balika Vidyalaya and Rahula College. Even pregnant women had to go under the dry sun. One man was sad at that moment. He is Bandula Hewage. He thought to do something different and came forward to grow some trees along the canal for hundreds meters.

Now those plants are grown. now all the people have a shelter. Specially for parents who come to pick up their children from the main schools.Without any others help he has done this massive work alone and succeeded. Here are some photos of this task and, the youtube videos with him.

HEALTHBEAT: Small but growing group of cystic fibrosis survivors over 40 offers clues for care

HEALTHBEAT: Small but growing group of cystic fibrosis survivors over 40 offers clues for care
June 24, 2010, 7:00 pm

(AP) WASHINGTON — Doctors always said allergies and asthma were behind Laura Mentch’s repeated lung and sinus infections. Only when she turned 50 did she discover the real culprit — a disease notorious for destroying children’s lungs.

Mentch is part of the gradual graying of cystic fibrosis: More and more patients are surviving into adulthood, some even to middle age and beyond.

Now, researchers are taking a close look at the first group to make it past age 40 with this incurable genetic disease, as a much-needed guide for patients and doctors on what to expect.

And they’re finding CF is even more complicated than thought. Consider Mentch: The Bozeman, Mont., woman is part of a small but growing subset of patients not diagnosed until adulthood — patients long assumed merely to have a mild version of the disease that, in its classic form, can quickly attack lungs.

Not so, contends Dr. Jerry Nick of National Jewish Health in Denver, home of one of the largest adult CF treatment centers. He studied how more than 3,000 long-term survivors fared, both at his center and using data from patients included in the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation’s national registry over 15 years. He found that once their disease revs up, those diagnosed as adults can deteriorate as quickly as those diagnosed younger.

"It’s not really mild CF, it’s delayed CF," says Nick, whose study was published last month in the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine.

If so, his findings may have ramifications for babies as well. How? In recent years, every state has begun screening newborns for cystic fibrosis, so that patients can start life-extending treatment before that first infection ever hits.

But doctors are having trouble determining if a fraction of those babies really will develop CF or not, because they harbor less common genetic mutations than the classic type linked to early, severe disease.

"We’re struggling with this," says Dr. Bruce Marshall of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, which issued guidelines in December recommending such children be closely monitored for signs of disease as they grow. "At this point, we really don’t know exactly what to do with these folks."

Those less common mutations are the same ones Nick says he’s seeing in people, like Mentch, whose CF wasn’t diagnosed until adulthood.

"This says you shouldn’t dismiss it" in the babies with those ambiguous test results, Nick cautions. "This is not the classic CF of 30 years ago."

About 30,000 Americans, and 70,000 people worldwide, are living with cystic fibrosis, caused by inheriting a flawed CF gene from each parent. The disease causes a sticky mucus to build up in the lungs, clogging them and leading to life-threatening infections. It also clogs the pancreas so the body can’t properly digest food.

Only a few decades ago, children with CF seldom survived elementary school. Today, thanks to earlier diagnosis and improved treatments, 47 percent reach 18 or older. Most of the 400 deaths a year are among teenagers and young adults, according to the CF Foundation’s registry.

So far, just over 5 percent of patients in the registry have made it beyond age 40 — although Nick’s study suggests some who seek care outside that network aren’t counted — and babies diagnosed today are expected to live into their 50s.

Beyond the adult-diagnosed phenomenon, Nick found patients who’d battled CF since childhood and bear the highest-risk gene type survived, too, showing there’s still lots to learn about factors that play a role. While the adult-diagnosed of course lived the longest, anyone who made it to 40 had a good chance of surviving another decade.

Nick’s main message: Proper care during adulthood fights the lung damage. Yet regardless of when they were diagnosed, Nick found, fewer than half of long-term survivors are treated at the nation’s specially designated CF centers once they pass 40 — while those who do fare better.

Mentch’s lung function greatly improved after the right diagnosis got her the right treatment, ending regular bouts of bronchitis she’d experienced since her teens.

"It’s not OK to have bronchitis twice a year and think it’s normal, but that’s … how I walked through life," says Mentch, now 57, who was diagnosed only when a doctor tested her sputum and found a type of Pseudomonas bacterium trapped in her lungs, a red flag for CF.

Now Mentch travels to the Denver CF clinic four times a year to stay on top of her care, which includes inhaled medications and a chest-vibrating vest to clear airway clogs. As the disease progresses, she says, "I have a huge responsibility to take care of myself."
